The Schaefer Guide · Denim Jackets
By the Schaefer Outfitter team, Texas · Updated November 5, 2026 · Materials and features pulled directly from our product pages
The denim jacket is the most American layer there is, and the Western version is the toughest of the bunch. Heavy denim, a leather collar and a yoke across the back turn a casual jacket into something you can actually work in.
The real decision is the lining. Unlined, flannel, fleece blanket or sherpa each change how warm the jacket is, how it layers and which months it lives on your hook. This guide lays them out side by side.

What Makes a Denim Jacket Western?
Start with the denim. Most of ours run 14 to 14.5 oz per square yard, heavy enough to take a fence post and soften into a second skin. Then look at the details: a full-grain leather collar that resists wear where a jacket frays first, a Western yoke across the back (our Legend uses a double-V), antique brass logo buttons and adjustable waist tabs so you can cinch the hem against the wind.
Unlined vs. Flannel vs. Fleece vs. Sherpa
| Lining | Feel | Warmth | Bulk | Best months | Our jackets |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unlined | Denim against your shirt | Light | Slim, layers under anything | Spring, early fall, cool summer nights | Kiger, Women's Unlined, Queen of the Rodeo |
| Cotton flannel | Soft, smooth, breathable | Moderate | Low | Fall and spring | Women's Legend Flannel, Golden Eagle |
| Fleece blanket | Plush, warm to the touch | Warm | Medium | Late fall into mild winter | Legend with Fleece Lining |
| Sherpa | Thick, wooly pile | Warmest | Most | Cold fall days and mild winter | Women's Sherpa Lined |
Sleeves matter too: lined jackets with slick taffeta or polyester sleeve linings slide on easily over a flannel or snap shirt.

How Should a Denim Jacket Fit?
- Shoulders at the edge. The seam should land at the end of your shoulder, not halfway down your arm.
- Hem at the belt. A trucker should end around your belt line. The Kiger runs a little shorter than the Legend.
- Room for one layer. Button it over your usual shirt. You should be able to reach forward without the back pulling tight.
- Sleeves to the wrist bone. Denim softens and relaxes a little, but it will not grow longer.
- Use the tabs. Waist or back tabs fine-tune the fit and seal out drafts.
- Check each style. The Legend runs large; most of our other denim jackets are true to size.
How to Care for a Denim Jacket
- Wash less. Denim looks and lasts better with fewer washes. Air it out between wears.
- Inside out, cold water. When you do wash, turn it inside out and use cold to slow fading.
- Protect the leather collar. Skip hot dryers. Hang to dry and condition the collar occasionally.
- Fluff sherpa and fleece. Air dry, then brush the lining gently to bring back loft.
- Spot clean embellishments. Beaded and embroidered jackets like Queen of the Rodeo need a gentle hand.
- Read the label. Our Women's Sherpa and Women's Legend Flannel jackets are machine washable; always follow the care tag.
Denim Jacket FAQ
What makes a denim jacket Western?
Heavy denim, a Western yoke across the back, and often a leather collar, brass buttons and adjustable waist tabs. Schaefer's Legend uses a double-V back yoke and a full-grain leather collar.
Which is warmer, sherpa or flannel lined?
Sherpa. Its thick pile traps more air than cotton flannel. Fleece blanket linings fall in between. Flannel is lighter and less bulky, which makes it better for fall and spring.
Is a lined denim jacket warm enough for winter?
For mild winters and cold mornings, yes, especially sherpa or fleece-lined. For deep cold, layer a wool vest underneath or choose a shearling or insulated waxed jacket.
Does the Legend Denim Jacket run big?
Yes. The Legend Denim Jacket with Fleece Lining runs large. Size down if you prefer a fitted look.
Can you wash a denim jacket with a leather collar?
Follow the care label. In general, wash sparingly in cold water, never tumble dry on high heat and condition the leather collar occasionally so it does not dry out.
What is a trucker jacket?
A trucker is the classic denim jacket cut that ends at the waist, with chest pockets and a button front. The Kiger is our classic trucker.
Can you wear a denim jacket with jeans?
Yes. Pick contrasting washes, such as a light jacket with dark jeans, so the look reads as intentional.
What weight denim is best for a jacket?
Around 14 oz is a sturdy, versatile weight that breaks in well. Most of our denim jackets are 14 to 14.5 oz.
